I am not looking to start a website about literary translation. That subject has become ‘frozen’ and dominated by academia of a peculiarly non-literary kind. Instead, I want to focus on a few examples of ‘crossovers’ – texts where I feel that whatever the details of the journey, a genuine transition between literary cultures has occurred, spontaneously or otherwise. What the poet and translator Robert Bly called the movement ‘from the first meeting with a poem to its recreation, when one says goodbye to it.’
